7 Things to Look for in a Somatic Practitioner

calm therapy space illustrating what to look for in a somatic practitioner for online somatic therapy and nervous system healing

Choosing the right somatic practitioner isn’t just about qualifications. It’s about finding someone who has the experience, presence and sensitivity to help you feel genuinely safe in exploring your inner world.

As somatic therapy becomes increasingly popular, more practitioners are incorporating body-based approaches into their work. That’s encouraging. It means more people are discovering the incredibly powerful role the body plays in our healing journey.

Not all somatic practitioners work in the same way.

If you’re looking for support, it can be difficult to distinguish the different types of somatic practitioners, the depth of work they offer, & to know what questions to ask, or what really matters most. While it's definitely good to check their training and qualifications, these too are only part of the picture.

Here are seven things I encourage people to consider when choosing a somatic practitioner.

1. Do you feel safe rather than impressed?

One of the first things to notice isn’t their credentials or their marketing spiel - it’s your own nervous system.

Do you feel yourself soften, even slightly, in their presence?

Do you feel listened to rather than analysed?

Healing happens when our nervous system feels safe enough to begin letting go of old protective patterns. That doesn’t mean sessions will always feel comfortable, but they should feel grounded, respectful, invitational and supportive.

2. Can they stay present without trying to fix you?

A skilled somatic practitioner doesn’t rush to solve, interpret or rescue you. Nor offer you generalistic advice.

Instead, they stay open & curious. They ask you questions and encourage you to find your own answers & inner truth. They help you slow down and notice what’s happening in your body without forcing an outcome.

Often the most healing moments come not from doing more, but from having someone who can simply stay present with your experience.

3. Do they follow you, rather than a protocol?

Every person's nervous system is unique.

There are many different methodologies of somatic work that have all developed out of Wilhelm Reich's origional founding work. Good practitioners draw upon a good grounding in these established methods, but they don’t treat every client the same way, or follow a rigid script.

They will have cultivated the nuance to respond to what is unfolding in the moment, adapting the session to your unique needs and areas to work on, your own pace and your own nervous system's capacity.

4. What training and experience do they have?

It’s completely reasonable to ask about someone’s background.

How long have they been practising? What depth of training have they completed? Whether it was fully assesed? ( this is particularly important with the rise of 'online 30 day somatic coaching programs' or 1 week trainings. )

Have they worked with people experiencing concerns similar to yours?

Is it well trauma-informed? ( This should be a given for ALL somatic trainings these days).

Training provides an important foundation. Experience develops the ability to apply that knowledge with sensitivity and discernment.

5. Are they committed to their own ongoing growth?

This is one of the questions people rarely think to ask.

Somatic work isn’t simply something we learn. It’s something we live.

The practitioners I respect most continue receiving sessions themselves, engage in supervision, reflect on their own patterns and remain committed to their own personal development.

Why does this matter?

Because the deeper we understand our own nervous system, and the intricacies of internal processes, the greater our capacity and insight in being able to support someone else’s.

6. Do you feel seen as a whole person?

You’re more than a collection of symptoms.

A good somatic practitioner will be interested in your story, your strengths, your resources and the unique way your nervous system has learned to protect you.

Rather than trying to make you fit a model, they work with the person in front of them.

7. Do you leave feeling more connected to yourself?

Perhaps the most important question of all is this:

After a session, do you feel a little more connected to yourself?

Not dependent on the practitioner.

Not convinced they’re the expert on your life.

But more aware of your own body, your own wisdom and your own capacity to heal.

The goal of somatic therapy isn’t to create reliance. It’s to help you build a relationship with yourself.

Final Reflections

Finding the right somatic practitioner is a little like finding the right pair of walking boots. The qualifications matter, but so does the fit.

Trust your instincts. Ask questions. Take your time. I interviewed a few different somatic practitioners before i began doing the work, and i'm glad i did. 😊 That inner listening to ourselves and trusting is very much part of the healing journey. Choosing the best for ourselves.

The right practitioner won’t simply have knowledge about the nervous system or the processes - they’ll create the conditions where your nervous system feels safe enough to begin changing.

That makes all the difference.

Somatic work is simply incredible, for the versatility and depth of inner transformation it can bring. I don't know where i would be personally without it. It is the best personal investment i have made to date. Whether you choose to work with me or another practitioner - i wish you a fantastic and fascinating journey into your inner lansdcapes and healing journey. Much love
