Exploring the Difference Between Massage Therapy and Somatic Therapy

In the worlds of holistic health and wellness, it can be confusing to know the difference between different therapies. Both massage therapy and somatic therapy hold significant places. Each offers unique benefits and caters to different aspects of physical and emotional well-being.

Understanding the differences, and similarities between these two modalities can help you understand how these body therapies work, & make informed choices about the type of bodywork and healing journey you wish to go on, especially in the areas of emotional healing and trauma healing.

What is Massage Therapy?

Massage therapy involves the manual manipulation of soft tissues in the body, such as muscles, tendons, ligaments, and connective tissues. This practice, which has been around for thousands of years, aims to promote relaxation, improve circulation, increase energy flow, reduce muscle tension, and alleviate pain.

There are a variety of techniques such as Swedish massage - for relaxation & wellbeing; Deep Tissue massage - for releasing deeper tension and knots, and sports massage. The primary focus of massage therapy is to address physical ailments and promote general wellness.

Benefits of Massage Therapy:

  1. Stress Reduction: By promoting relaxation, massage therapy helps reduce cortisol levels, the body's primary stress hormone.

  2. Pain Relief: Regular sessions can alleviate chronic pain conditions, such as back pain, arthritis, and fibromyalgia.

  3. Improved Circulation: Enhanced blood flow delivers more oxygen and nutrients to muscles and tissues, aiding in recovery and overall health.

  4. Flexibility and Range of Motion: Helps maintain joint flexibility and improves mobility.

  5. Improved Sleep: Regular massage therapy can lead to better sleep quality by reducing stress and promoting relaxation.

What is Somatic Therapy?

Somatic Therapy, on the other hand, delves deeper into the body-mind connection. Rooted in the understanding that our bodies hold onto experiences and emotions, Somatic Therapy aims to release stored trauma, emotions and stress through a combination of physical awareness and emotional & subconscious processing.

Developed by pioneers like Peter Levine, somatic therapy integrates body awareness into the therapeutic process, facilitating deeper emotional healing & often somatic-energetic release.

Key Elements of Somatic Therapy:

  1. Body Awareness: Clients are guided to become aware of their physical sensations, emotions, and thoughts, fostering a deeper connection between body and mind.

  2. Trauma Release: Techniques are used to release trauma stored in the body, addressing symptoms of PTSD and other trauma-related conditions.

  3. Emotional Healing: By accessing and processing stored emotions, somatic therapy helps clients achieve emotional balance and resilience. By freeing the body of stored emotions we often free up the root causes of tension, contraction, holding and pain & create more internal space for aliveness and energetic flow.

  4. Integration with Other Practices: Somatic Therapy can be combined with practices such as bodywork & massage, psychology, yoga, coaching, guided meditation, and mindfulness, it offers a holistic approach to deep inner healing. And an ever-deepening relationship with your own body and inner landscapes.

Similarities Between Massage Therapy and Somatic Therapy

While massage therapy and somatic therapy serve different primary purposes, they share several similarities:

  1. Focus on the Body: Both therapies involve working with the body to promote healing and well-being.

  2. Stress Reduction: Both can significantly reduce stress and promote relaxation.

  3. Improved Physical Health: Both therapies can lead to improvements in physical health, such as reduced pain and improved mobility.

  4. Holistic Approach: Both can be part of a holistic health routine that includes other practices like yoga, breath-work and mindfulness.

Differences Between Massage Therapy and Somatic Therapy

Despite their similarities, there are key differences between massage therapy and somatic therapy:

  1. Scope of Practice: Massage therapy primarily focuses on physical & structural ailments and muscle tension, while somatic therapy often goes much deeper than this, addressing root causes; opening up communication in the body-mind connection, and facilitates emotional healing.

  2. Techniques Used: Massage Therapy involves techniques like kneading, pressing, and stretching muscles and knowledge of anatomy. Somatic Therapy involves techniques like guided body awareness, inner diologing, movement, and breathwork.

  3. Goals: The goal of massage therapy is to relieve physical tension and pain, while somatic therapy aims to build body awareness and sensetivity in order to release stored trauma, get to the root causes of body and emotional pain, and foster emotional resilience.

  4. Sessions: Massage therapy sessions typically involve a passive client, lying on a table while the therapist works on them. In contrast, somatic therapy sessions involves more of the client, participating in exercises, awareness, breath and mindfulness practices, during or apart from touch. This encourages an empowering self-responsibility with ones own healing journey, and the acquiring lifelong tools that equips one to become independant of the therapist.

The Science Behind Somatic Therapy

Somatic therapy is based on the principle that the "body keeps the score" (the title of an incredible book, written by Bessel van der Kolk) or in other words, - holds onto past experiences, particularly traumatic ones, in the form of muscle tension, chronic pain, emotional repression, trapped life-force energy and other physical & psycho-somatic symptoms.

This concept is widely supported by research in neurobiology and psychology, highlighting the role of the autonomic nervous system in storing trauma.

How Somatic Therapy Works:

  1. Nervous System Regulation: Somatic therapy helps regulate the autonomic nervous system, shifting it from a state of fight-flight-or freeze to rest-and-digest, promoting healing.

  2. Mind-Body Connection: By tuning into bodily sensations, clients can access and process subconscious emotions & inner patterning & beliefs, leading to significant psychological shifts. It also helps to rebuild the bridge between the body and the mind, which during trauma, or everyday modern lifestyle can be impaired.

  3. Neuroplasticity: The practice encourages neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to rewire itself, facilitating long-term emotional and psychological healing.

Why Somatic Therapy Goes Deeper Than Massage Therapy

While massage therapy primarily addresses physical discomfort and promotes wellbeing, & relaxation - which can be deeply healing in itself, Somatic therapy delves into the intricate connection between the body and mind.

Somatic Therapy is often a deeper level of work, that can massage therapy can assist by developing our body-awareness. When we slow down, and engage in practices like yoga, meditation, mindful bodywork, somatic movement, or guided coaching sessions we enter deeper into the body-mind connection through the language of body sensations. The body semsations we experience, act as doorways into the subconscious and primal, limbic brains, giving us the ability to access parts of us that had been unconcious, or out of reach.
